Abstract

Edge detection plays a fundamental role in interpreting gravity and magnetic data, providing important constraints on subsurface structural boundaries, such as faults, contacts, and dikes. Among the available techniques, the horizontal tilt angle (TDX) filter and its variants have been widely applied in the literature. This study presents a comparative assessment of the TDX filter and several of its modifications, including TDXAS, INH, TDX2, NSAS, and HGITDX, with emphasis on their ability to accurately delineate source edges. Using synthetic models and real gravity data from the eastern region of the Central Indian Ridge, we show that HGITDX yields the most sharply localized and accurate edge responses under noise-free and low-noise conditions. In contrast, the classical TDX filter provides more stable but lower-resolution results. Our analysis provides practical guidance for selecting appropriate TDX-based filters under different data conditions.
