Abstract

Conversion of mangrove forests to coastal aquaculture has led to severe saline soil degradation in the Red River Delta Biosphere Reserve, exemplified by the study area in Dong Chau commune, Hung Yen province. The persistent issue is the conversion resulting in deep water levels (averaging 0.65 m to 1.3 m), which prevents tidal exposure necessary for mangrove regeneration. To address this, we developed and applied an integrated technological solution package. This package included ecological engineering for embankment stabilization, ridge techniques to significantly raise the planting area elevation, and a controlled water regulation regime to ensure target tidal exposure. The integrated approach successfully lowered the local inundation degree at the planting zone and created suitable physical conditions for restoration. Consequently, the survival rate of planted mangroves was over 80 % in the model area, compared to under 30 % using conventional methods. These results demonstrate a robust scientific basis for developing stable, sustainable silvo-aquaculture models through the restoration of degraded saline soil environments in similar coastal areas across Viet Nam.
